Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Game
NEW ROCHELLE, NY?The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Iona Friday. “We had a difficult time finding each other on the field,” said Rider head coach Kevin Long.
The Gales scored in the 21st minute of play on Lauren Machtel's second goal of the season.
Iona scored the insurance goal with 15 minutes left in the second half on Christina Rizzi's first goal. “We put more players up front to try to generate more offense, and that is when they scored their second goal,” Long said.
Iona (5-13-1, 3-4-1 MAAC) out-shot Rider (5-10-3, 1-7 MAAC) 9-7, including 6-2 in the second half. “We had one shot that hit the post,” Long said. “that was as close as we could get.”
Rider defeated Iona 1-0 last year in Lawrenceville. Rider and Iona have met 11 times with Rider holding a 7-3-1 advantage in the series that began in 1997. Rider won in 2006. Iona last defeated Rider in 2005.
Rider completes the 2007 season Sunday at Fairfield. “At this point we just want to play well,” Long said. “It would be nice to finish the season on a positive note. Hopefully we'll come ready to play.”
