Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Game
LAWRENCEVILLE?The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game to first place Marist Friday afternoon in a steady rain. “It didn't rain just on our side,” said Rider head coach Kevin Long.
Marist (8-4-2, 5-1 MAAC) scored the only goal it would need in the 13th minute of play, when Kate Fox scored her seventh goal of the season on a header. “Marist is just a better team,” Long said. “They have some All-MAAC players. They have Fox, who is one of the leading scorers in the MAAC and today she showed why.”
Marist scored again to make it 2-0 mid-way through the first half, and the Red Foxes added two more tallies in the 55th and 68th minutes. “The entire Marist teams plays with a commitment on the field at every position,” Long said. “They don't give up. They're tasting a potential championship ahead of them and they're playing that way. We don't seem to have that same hunger. That's disappointing.”
This loss eliminates Rider (5-8-3, 1-5 MAAC) from post-season play. “That is disappointing,” Long said. “For all of the positive results we had in non-conference play, they mean nothing.”
Rider was out-shot 17-7. Freshman goalkeeper Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made nine saves for Rider. Allison lane made three saves for the Marist shutout.
Rider lost 4-3 at Marist last season. The two teams have met 10 times with Marist holding a slight 6-4 advantage in the series that began in 1997. Rider beat Marist 2-0 at Rider in 2005.
Rider hosts Siena Sunday on Senior Day at 1pm. “We still have things to play for,” Long said. “We can still have a .500 record overall.”
