BUFFALO, NY--The Broncs lost a Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference game at Canisius Sunday. “We played better than we did on Friday, there was more urgency to our play, but we couldn't get enough shots off,” said Rider head coach Kevin Long.. “Canisius played well and we didn't.”
The host Golden Griffins out-shot Rider 13-6, including 6-2 in the second half. “How are you going to score goals with only six shots?” Long asked. “We have had trouble getting shots off all year and that was evident today.”
Canisius (6-8-1, 3-3 MAAC) scored with 10 minutes left in the first half to break the scoreless tie. “The first goal, she just turned and shot,” Long said. “It was a good goal.”
The Griffs put the game away with five minutes remaining in the second half when Rider (5-7-3, 1-4 MAAC) had everyone forward. “The second goal we were pushing everyone forward trying to apply offensive pressure,” Long said “We were trying to get the equalizer. I think we only had two defenders back and that resulted in their goal.”
Freshman goalie Alex Post (Chalfont, Pa./Central Bucks West) made two saves for Rider. Daniella Pettinari made two saves for Canisius.
Rider defeated Canisius 2-1 last season in Lawrenceville. Rider and Canisius have met 11 times and Rider holds a 6-4-1 advantage in the series that began in 1997. “Canisius was very physical and strong,” Long said.
Rider hosts Marist October 26. “We're happy to be home but only if we are playing better,” Long said. “We have to find a way to play better attacking soccer. We have no room to lose again if we plan on getting into post season. Our backs are absolutely against the wall.”
