LAWRENCEVILLE, NJ – The Rider University men's basketball team has drawn a No. 6 seed in the National Invitation Tournament and a road meeting with third-seeded Oregon Tuesday night at 10 p.m. (ET)/7 p.m. (PT) on ESPN3. The announcement was made on tonight's NIT Selection Show on ESPNU. The meeting will be the first in the two programs' histories.
"We're excited to continue our season in the NIT and face a quality opponent like Oregon," said Rider Head Coach
Kevin Baggett. "We'll have our guys ready to go for Tuesday."
Oregon is 22-12 on the season, reaching the Pac-12 Semifinals as the No. 6 seed, before falling to eventual runner-up USC. The Ducks posted a 10-8 record in league play and are 15-3 at home, including a 7-1 mark against non-conference opponents. Only Boise State, Utah and USC have traveled to Eugene and defeated Oregon this year.
The Ducks feature four scorers in double figures, led by All-Pac 12 Second Team selection Payton Prichard at 14.1 ppg. Elijah Brown is close behind at 13.8 point per game, while Troy Brown (11.7 ppg., 6.1 rpg.) and MiKyle McIntosh (6.2 rpg.) round out the double-figures scorers. Paul White (9.2 ppg.) has also made a strong scoring contribution, while Kenny Wooten is an imposing force inside at 2.6 blocks per game.
22-9 overall, Rider earned a share of the MAAC Regular Season Championship with a 15-3 mark in league play. It was Rider's fourth share of a MAAC title (2001-02, 2004-05, 2007-08). Redshirt freshman forward
Frederick Scott was named MAAC 6th Player of the Year, while Head Coach
Kevin Baggett earned his second MAAC Coach of the Year in six years at the helm. In non-conference play, the Broncs picked up road victories at Penn State and George Washington, while also earning victories over fellow NIT qualifiers Hampton (2) and Wagner.
Rider had a league-high four players selected to the All-MAAC Teams, including
Dimencio Vaughn (1st Team),
Stevie Jordan (2nd Team), Scott (3rd Team) and
Jordan Allen (3rd Team, All-Rookie Team). Rider's 22 wins are one away from the program record of 23, established in 2007-08 and matched in 2010-11 (both 23-11 campaigns).
Rider is making its second appearance in the NIT and its first in 20 years. The Broncs fell at Penn State on March 11, 1998. The Broncs are 1-9 in modern national postseason tournaments, going 0-3 in the NCAA's, 0-1 in the NIT, 0-2 in the CBI and 1-3 in the CIT.
