Rider's Sowa All-East
LAWRENCEVILLE—Rider University sophomore pitcher Kurt Sowa was named to the 2013 American Baseball Coaches/RAWLINGS Second Team All-East Region team, it was announced today.
This season Sowa (Bensalem, PA/Fr. Judge) won a Rider-record 11 games (11-1), 14th most in the nation. He allowed just 5.79 hits per nine innings pitched, 10th best in the nation. Opponents batted just .180 against him.
"Kurt had a great year," said Rider head coach Barry Davis. "Being recognized by the region's head coaches is an honor."
The Metro Atlantic Athletic Conference Pitcher of the Year after going 7-0 in conference play, Sowa was also a First Team All-New Jersey selection this year and a member of the MAAC All-Academic team.
Sowa struck out 54 batters in 79 innings and had two complete games, including a shutout.
In his two-year Rider career Sowa owns a collegiate record of 16-5.
The last Rider players to earn All-East Region honors were pitchers Mike Thomas '11 and Tyler Smith '13, who were named First Team All-East in 2011.
