Rider at Princeton Invitational - Day One

PRINCETON-The Rider University golf team is competing this weekend at the 26th annual Princeton Invitational, hosted by the Springdale Golf Club.

On Saturday after the opening two rounds at the par-71, 6,390 yard course, Rider in 14th place out of 14 teams after shooting 629 (315-314).

"We showed signs of improvement," said head coach Bob Whartenby.  "The conditions were good and we posted a few low scores.  We just didn't seem to put them all together to post something really low.  As a team, we got solid scores for the first three golfers but struggled with the fourth and fifth spots."

For the Broncs, freshman Cole Clark (Califon/Voorhees) is tied for 43rd out of 74 golfers  after rounds of 75 and 77 (152).

"Cole was low again for us," Whartenby added.  "He said the scores were ugly but there were no pictures on the scorecard.  Hopefully he can sharpen up his iron play and post a low number on Sunday.  He is putting well."

Also for Rider, sophomore James Buttermark (Island, N.Y./Monsignor Farrell) is in 64th place with a 158 (74-84), senior Chris Wolak (Issaquah, Wash./Hopkinton) (84-78) and teammate, freshman Luke Liddell (Philadelphia, Pa./Father Judge) (85-77) are 71st with a two-round total of 162 and junior Chris Foster (Pittsgrove/Schalick) is 74th with a 164 after rounds of 82 and 82.

Georgetown and Yale are tied for the lead, one shot ahead of third place Columbia and two shots in front of fourth place Harvard.  The host Tigers are in fifth place, three shots out.

Rider was 12th at the Princeton Invitational in 2011.

The 54-hole tournament concludes on Sunday.
